Transforming young lives through piano: four months at Kabatereine Memorial and Tiny Tots

For the past four months, the Living Music Foundation has been honored to bring the gift of piano education to the children of Kabatereine Memorial Primary School and Tiny Tots Kindergarten. This program, focused entirely on piano training, has unlocked creativity, built confidence, and created beautiful moments of musical discovery for both students and teachers.

Why Piano?

At the heart of this project was a simple belief: the piano is an ideal first instrument. It introduces melody, harmony, rhythm, and coordination in a way that’s tangible and accessible for young learners. It also gives immediate feedback—press a key, and you hear a sound. For many of these children, it was their first time ever sitting at a piano, and the wonder in their eyes was unforgettable.

How We Structured the Lessons

To meet the unique needs of each age group, we developed two tailored piano curricula:

• Tiny Tots Kindergarten: Focus was on basic musical awareness using the keyboard. Students learned through color-coded keys, sing-along finger exercises, and movement games that connected the sounds they made with physical motion. The goal was early familiarity and joy—not perfection.

• Kabatereine Memorial Primary School: Older students explored note reading, simple melodies with both hands, chords, and basic rhythm patterns. They progressed from learning finger numbers to confidently playing short pieces and even composing simple tunes of their own.

Lessons were taught weekly, and each session built on the last. Children practiced on portable keyboards provided by the foundation.

Progress and Breakthroughs

We’ve seen tremendous growth over these four months. Some students who started off hesitant and unsure are now playing with both hands and reading beginner sheet music. A few even performed confidently at school assemblies and music showcases.

Even more remarkable than the technical progress is the emotional and social growth. Piano lessons have helped children build discipline, patience, and pride in their accomplishments.

Looking Ahead

We are currently developing follow-up learning materials for both schools so the students can continue learning even beyond our direct involvement. We’re also exploring partnerships that could help us provide more keyboards and perhaps even launch piano clubs within the schools.

Welcoming Youth at Our Center

In addition to our work in schools, we were thrilled to welcome several enthusiastic young people from the wider community to our Living Music Foundation center during this time. These youths, some of whom had prior exposure to music and others who were absolute beginners, showed a deep interest and commitment to learning piano.

Their lessons were more individualized, allowing for greater focus and depth. Some began working on more advanced skills such as chord inversions, playing by ear, and learning to create major and minor chords.
